Frequently asked questions
How does online tutoring work?
Before the arranged lesson time, you will be emailed an invite to an online meeting usually a Google Meet, but Zoom and Teams can also be used when necessary. Just click on the link and the online meeting will start in a browser tab. The tutor will most likely already be there. The lesson will proceed using a presented whiteboard, which the student can see in their browser. Other useful resources can also be shared, like powerpoints, past papers, question papers and animations. The lessons are very interactive and are normally a mix of theory, instruction, examples and trying questions. Once the lesson has ended, any notes from the whiteboard, plus any resources used or that may be useful, are emailed to the student.
Do I need any special apps?
No, just a good internet connection and a browser.
Do I need any special equipment?
A laptop or computer is best, as the bigger screen makes the whiteboard easier to see, however, a tablet works fine and even a phone at a push! Headphones and a microphone mean better sound quality, but they are by no means a requirement.
What if there are technical problems?
If there are problems with the tutor’s equipment, they may extend the session (if possible) or reschedule if a significant amount of time has been lost. If the problems are with the student’s equipment, then they will have to either try and fix them or arrange a reschedule, if possible.
Do I have to have a camera on?
No, but it does help the tutor to establish a working relationship, and provides the tutor with visual feedback on understanding and engagement.
How much does it cost?
Please see the tutoring page for the latest prices.
Do I have to buy a block of lessons?
After the initial single lesson, it is standard practice to book at least another 4 sessions, paid for in advance.
What if I change my mind?
Any remaining booked lessons will be fully refunded.
How do I pay?
By bank transfer to a business account.
What if I miss a session?
Unless it’s an emergency, you will be charged for the missed session.
Can I reschedule a session?
With at least 24 hours’ notice, and at the discretion of the tutor, sessions can be rescheduled where possible.
What regions do you cover?
Global! It does depend on time zones, but check with the tutor to confirm.
Can face to face sessions be arranged?
Yes, depending on distance between the student and tutor. Check for details.
Can SEND requirements be accommodated?
Yes, for most conditions. We have experience with a wide range of educational needs. Please discuss with the tutor.
Do you set homework?
No, although a tutor may recommend work for the student to do between sessions, which may or may not be supplied by the tutor. The tutor will not mark work, unless a specific arrangement has been set up to do so.
